Lots of features come in a cool design: the MFP offers USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity; two 150-sheet input trays; automatic duplex for PC and Mac users; and slots for CompactFlash media, Memory Stick, SD Card, and XD-Picture Card, as well as ports for USB thumb drives and PictBridge-connected devices. The 50-sheet output tray opens automatically from the front when you start printing – great convenience. Note that the letter / A4 flatbed scanner on the Pixma MG6120 uses contact-image-sensor (CIS) technology; the scanner on the more expensive Pixma MG8120 uses a charge-coupled device (CCD) technology, which is more sensitive but heavier.
One of the few things missing from the Pixma MG6120 is an automatic document feeder; if you prefer, have a look at the Canon Pixma MX882, which compresses a smaller version of the touch panel onto the front so that the ADF can be at the top.
Our monochrome documents – ten pages of plain text, and a newsletter with minimal grayscale graphics – look sharp and print at a speed of 7.6 pages per minute on PC and 7.8 ppm on Mac. On a PC, photo-size color photos are printed at 2.6 ppm on plain paper and 1.9 ppm on Canon-owned photo paper. A full-page, high-resolution photo we printed on the Mac appeared at the intermediate range of 0.5 ppm. The Pixma MG6120 scans monochrome and color images quickly, and copies at an average speed.
The output quality is very good. Color prints and copies show an orange tinge on plain paper (a common trend among Canon printers), but these imperfections are less noticeable on photo paper. Simple monochrome text prints and copies appear black and sharp, but color scans appear slightly dark.
The ink costs for the Pixma MG6120 are slightly lower than usual. A standard-size 328-page black cartridge is $ 16, or 4.9 cents per page. The cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges cost $ 14 each and last for about 450 pages, which makes up about 3.1 cents per color per page.
The Canon Pixma MG6120 manages to look stylish and perform well, a deadly companion in all areas of life. The Epson Artisan 725 has cheaper ink and slightly better speeds but falls a little short in features and print quality.
