Canon PIXMA iP2702 Driver Download– Canon has an enviable reputation for inkjet printers and all-in-ones, and its range of printers starts at under £50. The PIXMA iP2702 is an upgrade to the PIXMA iP2600, the main difference being the ink cartridges and software bundle, plus a redesign of the external case.

The printer design is clean and fuss-free. The textured black top surface rises to a smooth plateau formed by the back of the glossy black paper tray. This tray lifts to open the paper guides for A4 sheets, although the machine can also print at sizes up to 15 x 10cm.

No output tray and printed pages go to the desktop, which can be awkward if it has a smooth surface, as sheets tend to float and don’t collect in neat piles. There are two control buttons, each with an inset LED, mounted at the far right of the top panel, one for power and another for paper feed and error conditions.

The only sockets on the back are for power and USB data connections – this machine has no wired or wireless network support. However, the power cord plugs directly into the printer without a separate power supply. Only HP still feels the need to have power ‘bricks’ circling under the table.

The top and front covers are hinged together to provide access to the twin ink cartridges; when you lift the cover, the headgear slides into a comfortable position so you can clamp it.

It uses the part of the ISO standard that excludes processing time before starting to print, so it’s still a little unrealistic.

In the real world, where you have to wait for processing and printing before you can use documents, you tend to look at time and speed, as we found. Our 5-page A4 text document took 50 seconds to complete, delivering a speed of 6ppm. Oddly, the 20-page document, which involved a lot of pre-print ink cleaning, finished in 3:27, a slower speed of 5.8ppm. Both numbers are slightly slower than the claimed speed but make sense for an entry-level inkjet printer.

The engine doesn’t perform well with black text and color graphic printouts, returning a speed of 2.4ppm, just half the claimed speed. It is still on par with its main competitors. Printing a 15 x 10cm photo on Canon Pro II Photo Paper in high-quality mode takes 1:19, but this time is reduced to 51 seconds in standard mode.

It is fast for photo printing, and there is not much difference between prints between the two modes. The Standard mode print is a little darker, and some detail is lost in the shadows, but both are generally very good, with no flashy colors and subtle gradations of color in the sky.

The color graphics also print well, although some trepidation patterns are visible in some of the lighter color fills. Color prints on plain paper are generally bright and eye-catching, and black text is very clean and sharp. None of the prints make you want to look closely at signs of ink bleeding.

Most Canon printers are very quiet, but the iP2702 has the shameful honor of being the noisiest printer we’ve tested. Quite quiet when printing, but, as usual, little effort has been made to reduce the noise made by the paper feed mechanism. We recorded this at the peak of 80dBA at half a meter. According to the British Columbia Worker’s Compensation Board (PDF warning), that’s the kind of noise level you can expect from a motorbike or private plane and certainly very annoying if you have a printer next to you on a desk.

This machine has only two cartridges, one black, and the other three colors, although both are available in two yields. Using the high-yield version for both black and color cartridges results in a cost per page of 4.5p for ISO black and 9.8p for color ISO, including 0.7p for paper. This cost is quite high, although the cost of black printing is higher compared to rival machines than color ones.

No doubt you can get good print quality from the PIXMA iP2702. There’s also little doubt that this is a basic device, a bit pricey to run, and one that should come with a set of ear protection. It’s time for printer makers to consider the noise level, along with the look and features of their machines.
